Another Famous Rabbi Trying to Prove Jesus Isn’t God Fails!
Rabbi Michael Skobac, a popular figure associated with Jews for Judaism, recently argued that the New Testament does not present Jesus as God. He claims that neither the disciples, the Gospel writers, nor the authors of the Epistles viewed Jesus as divine.
However, this assertion falls apart when we closely examine the Gospels.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” – John 1:1
The claim that Jesus is not presented as God is not only incorrect but contradicts the very theme of the Gospels.
Let’s walk through key passages in Luke’s Gospel that directly refute this argument.
Luke’s Gospel Theme: Presenting Jesus as God
Luke’s Gospel is carefully structured to present Jesus as God from the very beginning. Luke weaves Old Testament prophecies and divine encounters into the narrative to make it clear that Jesus is the promised Messiah and God in the flesh.
This theme is reinforced through angelic proclamations, prophetic revelations, and Scriptural fulfillments that leave no doubt about Jesus’ identity.
John the Baptist: The Messenger Preparing the Way for God
One of the clearest ways Luke affirms Jesus’ divinity is through the role of John the Baptist. John is described as the one who prepares the way for the Lord, a direct fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.
The Prophecy in the Old Testament
Luke’s Gospel directly connects John the Baptist’s mission to key Old Testament prophecies:
“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple.” – Malachi 3:1
“Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.” – Exodus 23:20
“A voice cries: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.’” – Isaiah 40:3
These passages make it clear that the one being prepared for is God Himself. Yet, in the Gospel of Luke, it is Jesus who John is preparing the way for. This is an undeniable affirmation of Jesus’ divine nature.
The Angel Gabriel Declares Jesus’ Divinity (Luke 1:17)
When the angel Gabriel appears to Zechariah, he proclaims that John the Baptist will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb and will turn people back to God.
The role assigned to John is one that, according to prophecy, is directly connected to preparing for the coming of the Lord.
“And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” – Luke 1:17
If John prepares the way for Jesus, and the Old Testament states that the messenger prepares the way for God, then Jesus is God.
Zechariah’s Prophecy About Jesus (Luke 1:76)
Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, is later filled with the Holy Spirit and proclaims:
“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways.” – Luke 1:76
Again, Zechariah affirms that John’s mission is to prepare the way for the Lord. Given that John prepares the way for Jesus, Zechariah is directly declaring that Jesus is the Lord.
Elizabeth’s Recognition of Jesus as Lord (Luke 1:42-43)
Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, also affirms Jesus’ divine identity. When Mary visits Elizabeth, Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaims:
“And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” – Luke 1:43
Elizabeth calls the baby in Mary’s womb “my Lord”, the same title used for God throughout the Old Testament. This recognition, inspired by the Holy Spirit, further confirms Jesus’ divinity.
Jesus as God: Affirmed from the Beginning
Luke’s Gospel presents Jesus as God from its very first chapter. Through the testimony of the angel Gabriel, Zechariah, Elizabeth, and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, the evidence is overwhelming.
The argument that Jesus is not portrayed as divine in the Gospels fails in light of the overwhelming evidence.
