5 Things That Will Hold You Back From Financial Freedom

Achieving financial freedom is a dream for many, but few actually reach it. Why? It’s not just about strategy, budgeting, or finding the perfect business idea—it’s about mindset.

The way you think, what you focus on, and the fears you allow to control you can either push you toward success or keep you stuck in a cycle of frustration.

If you want to experience financial freedom, you must first identify and remove the mental roadblocks that are holding you back.

In this post, we’ll uncover five common ways people sabotage their own success—and how you can break free.

Many people never take action because they don’t believe they have what it takes. They compare themselves to others and feel inadequate.

But the truth is, YOU ARE UNIQUE AND SPECIAL, and God has given you everything you need to succeed.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” – Psalm 139:14

You were created with a purpose. The skills, experiences, and passions you have are not accidents. If God has placed a vision in your heart, He will equip you to fulfill it. Stop doubting yourself and start taking action.

How This Mentality Holds You Back

  • You hesitate to start because you believe you’re not qualified.
  • You downplay your achievements and gifts.
  • You let comparison steal your confidence.

Instead of focusing on what you lack, start focusing on what you have. Every expert started as a beginner.

I used to believe I wasn’t good enough to teach others about business and faith. But when I started, I realized that my journey—my struggles, mistakes, and victories—were exactly what people needed to hear.

2. Thinking You Should Be Further Ahead

It’s easy to feel frustrated when you see others succeeding faster than you. You might think, “I should be making more money by now,” or “I should have a bigger audience.” But success isn’t a race.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1

Why This Hurts Your Progress

  • It causes discouragement and makes you want to quit.
  • It leads to chasing shortcuts instead of building a solid foundation.
  • It keeps you from celebrating small wins.

Everyone’s journey is different. Some people take years to reach their goals, while others seem to explode overnight. The key is to stay faithful with what you have now.

Action Step: Instead of focusing on where you think you “should” be, track your progress over time. Are you better than you were six months ago? A year ago? Small, consistent improvements lead to massive breakthroughs.

Many people focus on money instead of value. They chase quick profits instead of building something meaningful. If you focus on serving people and solving problems, the money will follow.

A great book that reinforces this principle is my 50 Success Secrets book. One major lesson from the book is that success is about providing massive value.

If you help people in a way that genuinely improves their lives, they will happily pay for your products or services.

Common Distractions That Pull You Off Course

  • Obsessing over making money instead of helping people.
  • Comparing yourself to others instead of focusing on your strengths.
  • Trying to do too many things instead of mastering one.

Shift your mindset from “How can I make money?” to “How can I serve others?” The more value you bring, the more money will naturally flow to you.

Early in my journey, I was more focused on making sales than genuinely helping people. But when I switched my focus to serving and solving real problems, my income skyrocketed.

The more people I helped, the more financial blessings came my way.

4. Wasting Your Time

Time is the most valuable asset you have, but many people waste it on things that don’t move them forward.

Watching endless social media, binge-watching TV, or procrastinating on important work can kill your dreams.

How Time-Wasting Hurts You

  • You stay stuck in the same place instead of making progress.
  • You lose motivation because you see no results.
  • You let small distractions keep you from big opportunities.

Look at your daily habits. Are you spending time on things that bring you closer to financial freedom, or are you wasting hours on distractions?

Action Step: Track how you spend your time for a week. Identify the biggest time-wasters and replace them with productive habits.

Fear stops people from taking action. Fear of failure, fear of what others will think, fear of making mistakes—it’s all designed to keep you stuck. But the Bible reminds us not to live in fear.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7

What Fear Looks Like

  • You hesitate to launch your business or idea.
  • You delay decisions, waiting for the “perfect” time.
  • You let criticism or self-doubt stop you from moving forward.

When I started my business, I was terrified. I thought, “What if no one buys from me?” But I took the leap.

If I had let fear stop me, I would have never reached this point.

The only way to overcome fear is to take action despite it. Every successful person you see has faced fear. The difference is, they moved forward anyway. You can do the same.

Reach Your Financial Success

If you’ve been struggling to reach financial freedom, it’s time to pause and take an honest look at what’s been holding you back.

The enemy loves to keep people stuck in fear, doubt, and distraction, but you don’t have to stay there.

The good news is, no matter how long you’ve felt stuck, you can start making different choices today. You can choose to believe that God has already equipped you with everything you need.

Choose to stop comparing yourself to others and trust that you’re exactly where you need to be in this season. You can focus on serving people instead of just chasing money.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” – Proverbs 16:3

Your financial breakthrough isn’t just about making money—it’s about walking in the purpose God has for you.

When you shift your mindset and align your actions with His wisdom, doors will begin to open in ways you never expected.

Quick Recap:

  1. Stop believing you’re not good enough. You were created for a purpose.
  2. Stop thinking you should be further ahead. Trust that God’s timing is perfect.
  3. Refocus on the right things. Serve first, and the money will follow.
  4. Stop wasting time. Small, daily actions lead to big results.
  5. Move past fear. Everything you want is on the other side of obedience and courage.

Don’t let these five things hold you back any longer. Take action today, trust God with the process, and step boldly into the financial freedom that is waiting for you.
